Optical Fiber Connectivity
Fiber connectivity is the fastest
communication media for data/Voice communication. Data communication speed in
fiber is in gigabyte. For fiber communication
we require following components.
Now we will discuss
about all above component in details:
1. First and Major Component for OFC connectivity is fiber cable:
A fiber-optic cable
is a high-speed network cable, made up of strands of glass fibers. Generally
there are
three types of fiber optic cable in
use.
Fiber
Optic Cable
- Multi mode Optical Fiber Cable
- Plastic optical fiber or photonic fiber.
Note:
Transparent glass or plastic fiber allows the guiding of light from one end to
the other with minimal loss is the most efficient.1 G fiber/10G Cable:
a) Single Mode Optical Fiber Cable: Single Mode cable is a single stand (most
applications use 2 fibers) of glass fiber with a diameter of 8.3 to 10 microns
that has one mode of transmission.
b b) Multi-Mode optical Fiber Cable: Multi Mode cable has a little bit bigger diameter, with a common
diameters in the 50-to-100 micron range for the light carry component. Most of
the applications in which Multi-mode fiber is used, 2 fibers are used. Distance
between to points for Multimode connectivity is 500 meter.
c c) Plastic optical fiber (POF) or polymer optical
fiber is an optical fiber that
is made out of polymer just like to glass optical
fiber, transmits light through the core of the fiber. Its main
advantage over the glass product that its robustness under bending and stretching.
Note: Single-mode fiber gives you a higher
transmission rate and up to 50 times more distance than multi mode
2. SC Pigtail 9/125 Single mode:
A fiber
pigtail is a single, short optical fiber that has an optical
connector pre-installed on one end and a length of exposed fiber at
the other end. The end of the pigtail is stripped and fusion
spliced to a single fiber of a multi-fiber trunk.
3. SC Flange Single mode/Multi mode or Fiber Optic FC Coupler
Fiber
Optic SC Flange or Adapter, SC-SC Single
mode Simplex / SC-SC Multimode Simplex. Normally used to
fiber optic cables with standard SC (male) connectors.
Pigtail Adapter
Note: SC Flange Single mode/Multi mode Fiber Optic FC Coupler will
fix in SC 6 Port Adapter Panel and this panel will fix in to LIU Adapter Panel SC Flange

Adapter
4. LC-SC Duplex Fiber Patch Cord
LC Fiber Optic Patch Cord. LC stands for Lucent Connector.LC connector is a small
form-factor fiber optic connector and was developed to replace SC connector due to their smaller
size. (LC is only half the
footprint of SC connector).
Multi Mode Single Mode
5. Fiber Optic Transceiver :
This also
was known as Fiber Optical Transceiver, Optical Module, Optics Module etc. It is a
single, packaged device that uses fiber optic technology to
transmit and receive data. 'Transceiver' is a combination
of two words, transmitter' and 'receiver'. We connect(insert) this
module in to switch’s SFP port.
Fiber Optic Transceiver Switch with SFP Port
Note: SFP (Small form-factor plug gable ) devices are
hot-swappable interfaces used primarily in network and storage switches. The SFP ports on a switch and SFP modules enable
the switch to connect to
fiber and Ethernet cables of different types and speeds.
5. LIU
Unit
LIU box is Smaller basic patch panel & cabinet used in
interconnecting, cross-connecting. The LIU (optical
fiber interconnecting unit) is modular and suitable for optical cable
installation, bare fibers splicing & protection, pigtails storage &
management.
